Harvey Glatman, also known as the "Lonely Hearts Killer" or the "Glamour Girl Slayer," was an American serial killer who operated in the late 1950s. Born in 1927, Glatman grew up in New York City and developed a fascination with photography and women's clothing.
Glatman's crimes began in 1957 when he moved to California. He posed as a professional photographer, luring young women with the promise of modeling opportunities. In reality, he had sinister intentions. Glatman's modus operandi involved kidnapping his victims, then binding and photographing them in various poses before sexually assaulting and strangling them.
His first known victim was Judith Ann Dull, a 19-year-old student, whom he met through a classified ad for a photoshoot. In a disturbing twist, Glatman documented Dull's fear and distress in a series of photographs before killing her.
After murdering Dull, Glatman continued his predatory spree, targeting women who placed ads in the "lonely hearts" section of newspapers. He abducted and killed Shirley Ann Bridgeford and Ruth Mercado, both of whom were lured with the promise of work as models. Like his first victim, Glatman photographed his subsequent victims before murdering them.
Glatman's killing spree came to an end in October 1958 when he attempted to abduct another potential victim, but she managed to escape and reported him to the police. Authorities arrested Glatman, and he subsequently confessed to his three known murders.
In March 1959, Harvey Glatman stood trial for his crimes. He was found guilty of the three murders and sentenced to death. Glatman. He was killed in the gas chamber at San Quentin State Prison on September 18, 1959, less than two years after his arrest.
